Dr. Sutton's Profile

Hugo Sutton MD, FRCS(C) received his medical degree in 1970 from the London University in England, after which he spent two years in Alberta as a family doctor. He completed his ophthalmology training at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, where he received his certified specialist status in 1977. He remains on staff at the University of British Columbia as a Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Sutton was instrumental as the lead teacher of cataract surgery at the University Eye Care Centre between 1987-1991, and has completed more than 10,000 cataract surgeries with lens implantation.

In 1991, Dr. Sutton founded the Broadway Eye Surgery Centre, the first clinic in Canada devoted solely to laser refractive surgery. He was the founding surgeon at LASIK Vision in 1997, an organization that grew to 29 centres North America wide and trained and employed over 50 surgeons and more than 120 optometrists. He developed the protocols that allowed more than 13,000 procedures per month to be carried out safely in his group.

He has taught numerous lectures and courses to peers and students, and has also carried out extensive research in the field of ophthalmology. He is board certified in the US as a fellow of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

He is now the chief surgeon at Iris Ophthalmology, Langley B.C. This is the western Canadian showpiece for Iris, le groupe visuel, Canada's largest eyecare provider.

Dr. Sutton has performed in excess of 35,000 laser refractive procedures.
